Synopsis For three days in November a holiday camp in Norfolk, England becomes the venue for a unique music event - 'The Speedfreaks Ball'. Over 1000 Punks, Psychobillies, Rockabillies, Mods, Rockers, Scooterboys and Skinheads take over the family fun centre and 24 bands provide virtually non-stop performance. For ‘The Speedfreak’ this is “an alternative music festival for people who live their life in an alternative way.” He says these events represent “a self-imposed exile” where fans and musicians alike can do what they want to do away from mainstream corporate control. Onstage, backstage, in the bar and 'at home' in the chalets, through interviews and observation the film takes its audience into the heart and soul of the UKs alternative music scene. 'We've all united to fight the menace that is the X-Factor' states Captain Sensible of the Damned, a bus disgorges its multinational audience to the backing of Geordie street punk band Crashed Out's working class anthem This is Our Music, Don't Tell us What to Say. The fans represent a mixture of Youth Cultures - but they're not youths any longer, the majority are way past that, but is this just a nostalgia trip? Most of the bands have been playing for at least twenty years, but are they just hanging onto a fading past? Punk icon Ed Tudor Pole has been given a less than prestigious Sunday afternoon slot, but will he be able to form a band in time? This film answers these, and many more, questions with no holds barred. Featured Artists: John Robb – Goldblade P.Paul Fenech – The Meteors Roddy Radiation – Skabilly Rebels Captain Sensible – The Damned Ed Tudor Pole Watford Jon – Argy Bargy Crashed Out, Coffin Nails, Guns on the Roof, Long Tall Texans, Guanabatz, Section 5, The Business, Jaxy and the 357's And Punks, Psychobillies, Rockabillies, Mods, Rockers, Scooterboys and Skinheads from all over the world. |
